Zika Virus

Zika Virus Update - 29/01/2016

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), there has been an outbreak of the mosquito-borne virus Zika in parts of Central and South America. Symptoms may include mild fever, skin rash and conjunctivitis. These symptoms normally last for 2-7 days.

Recently in Brazil, local health authorities have observed an increase in Zika virus infections in the general public as well as an increase in babies born with microcephaly (smaller than normal skull) in northeast Brazil.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), as of 15 January 2016, local transmission had been identified in at least 14 countries or territories in the Americas. To view the latest updates on the countries with active transmission please visit the CDC website here.

At this stage there is no vaccine or preventative drug available against this virus. The best way to prevent Zika is to avoid mosquito bites by:

  • - Wearing long sleeves and trousers
  • - Using insect repellents when outdoors

In line with the above health warnings, Dragoman recommends all women who are pregnant or trying to get pregnant to consult with their doctors before booking their trip to Central and South America.

*As of 26 January 2016, the Zika virus is currently active in the following areas where we travel – Bolivia, Brazil, Colombia, Ecuador, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Mexico and Panama. The Aedes mosquito carrying the Zika virus is unlikely to be found at altitudes over 2,000m meaning none of our current trips to Bolivia are affected.
