Foreign Travel Advice

This trip is ideal for someone who wants to explore the majority of West Africa and is happy to take it slowly. Do not expect it to mirror any trip that you have made to East or Southern Africa, because West Africa is so utterly different and this trip is designed to really show you how.

So will you see Africa's big game? Yes, but not to the extent that you would elsewhere. You will get to do and see so much more and without the annoying encumbrances of more tourist conscious destinations. There's forest trekking, village hikes, pirogue trips through swamplands and mountain walks to stunning waterfalls. There's village stays with dancing, music, culture and festivities; stunning beaches, sand and sun; boat trips to stilt villages; wonderful food; local beers and local football; history and culture; laughter and smiles. This is Africa at its rawest without the infrastructure that has been built up elsewhere and it is a privilege to be able to travel through it.

2 days at the coastal resort of Cap Skirring
Overland the rough and tough roads of Guinea

This is a long and challenging journey, but it is immensely rewarding. Road conditions can be very poor and the going can be slow and this trip is very much about participation. We will be wild camping for much of the time, as well as staying in home stays and some hotels, so do expect to be outside of your comfort zone for some of the time.

Day 1 - Dakar

Border information: if you are joining at Dakar, you will most likely enter Senegal at Dakar Blaise Diagne International Airport (IATA code: DSS).

Today is an arrival day with a pre departure meeting at 10:00am. Your leader will leave a note in reception telling you where this important meeting will take place. Your leader will collect your kitty and check your passport and insurance details at this meeting.

The afternoon will be free to explore the cosmopolitan city and perhaps take an optional trip to the famous Île de Goreé.

Please note that many of the options listed below will only be possible for those with extra time in Dakar before the start of your trip with us - please contact the Sales team if you would like to book pre-tour accommodation with us to have extra time exploring Dakar.

While this trip did not have the scenery, antiquities, adventures of other Dragoman trips, it did expose us to a wonderful aspect of human life little witnessed by the rest of the world.

The route was planned very well

My only previous experience with Dragoman was from 20 years ago when I did 12 weeks in Central and South America. So I knew what to expect, and having then travelled with other overland tours, I can say Dragoman provides the best experience.
