Foreign Travel Advice

Pakistan is an extraordinary country to visit and is not what most travellers expect. This journey is designed to show the many faces of the country, from its great chaotic and churning cities to its spectacular mountains. The heart of this trip is about exploring the Karakoram region, including settlements such as Gilgit and Hunza, but also the mountains themselves. It is not a journey for the faint hearted, with switchback roads climbing and tumbling through mountain passes and gorges, past vast fast flowing mountain torrents. Hiking in the magnificent Karakoram is intrinsic to the journey and there will be plenty of opportunity to explore below the towering peaks of the Himalayas as well as some of the ancient bazaars, forts and palaces. Perhaps one of the most historic cities in Pakistan is Lahore and we will allow enough time to get under the skin or this great city and to find out about its Mogul past, as well as taking an afternoon to witness the most bizarre event in all of India and Pakistan, the flag lowering ceremony at the Wagah border.

Visit the Old walled city of Lahore and explore the local Bazaars
Watch the daily flag lowering ceremony between Pakistan and India at Wagah Border
Explore the imposing Rohtas Fort
Drive through stunning Himalaya and Karakoram Ranges
Enjoy a stunning two day hike up to Nanga Parbat ( Herlikoffer ) Base Camp
Visit a Pamir Music school in Gulmit Village
Hike up to Passu Glacier viewpoint

This is not a trip for the faint hearted and is both culturally and physically challenging. It is a trip for those that understand blending into the local culture; it's a trip for travellers not tourists and you need to come with an open mind. There will be long days driving and accommodation can be basic.

Day 1 - Lahore
Border Information: If joining in Lahore, you will most likely enter Pakistan at Allama Iqbal International Airport (IATA code: LHE).

There will be a pre-departure meeting at 10.00am - please look out for a note from your leader at the reception of the joining hotel upon arrival with more details about this important meeting.

After the meeting we will visit the Old Walled City with its narrow, dimly lit alleys. Here you should be able look at all the local handicrafts and jewellery through the Bazaars.

In the late afternoon we will drive to Wagah border to watch the flag lowering ceremony. The lowering of the flags is a daily military practice that the security forces of India and Pakistan have jointly followed since 1959.

Please note that many of the options listed below will only be possible for those with extra time in Lahore before the start of your trip with us - please contact your sales agent if you would like to book pre-tour accommodation with us to have extra time exploring Lahore.
