Foreign Travel Advice

Overlanding started along the Silk Route back in the 60s, the famed Hippy Trail. Our route takes us along the northern Silk Route, across the heart of Central Asia. From the legendary city of Istanbul crossing the wild mountains and lush valleys of the Caucasus, through Georgia and Azerbaijan; both countries renowned for their food, home stays and hospitality.

The Caspian Sea is the divide between true Central Asia, the deserts and nomads of Turkmenistan and the infamous city of Ashgabat. In the north of the Karakum deserts, lies the country's most bizarre attraction, the Darvaza Crater. Crossing the Oxus River is the heart of the route, Uzbekistan's fabulous cities of Khiva, Bukhara and Samarkand. Towering above the deserts are the Tian Shan Mountains and the lands of Kyrgyzstan; home to shepherds and horseman; this is our opportunity to really get to grips with the local life.

Crossing the Torugart Pass, the lands of Western China open up at Kashgar; ahead lies the vast bowl of the Taklimakan Desert and then it's onto the edge of the Tibet Plateau and the Tibetan town of Xi'ahe. But no trip to China can be complete without a visit to the seminal city of Xi'an, home of the terracotta army.

Explore Kashgar's traditional Sunday market and Animal market
Cross the Taklamakan Desert
Exploration of the oasis and the Jiaohe ruins at Turpan
Guided tour of the Mogao caves, Dunhuang
Camp near an adobe section of the Great Wall near Jiayuguan
Explore the colourful natural phenomenon of the Rainbow Mountains
Cross the northern end of the Tibetan Plateau
Explore Xiahe - one of Tibets most historic cities
See Bingling Si's vast Buddha statue and outstanding cave sculptures
Explore the stunningly beautiful Mt. Kongtong and its temples

This great road journey through Asia, crosses different cultures and religions. It is ideal for lovers of history and culture. A great trip to meet different peoples and for lovers of stunning scenery, from deserts, river valleys.

Ian F

A great itinerary and fantastic crew. As ever some quite challenging travelling conditions and a bit of seemingly unnecessary variety in the accommodation when kitty was subsequently returned.

Vivien M

Excellent trip, such rich and varied experiences across 6 countries that I would never have travelled to on my own. My 3rd with Dragoman and best so far.

Alexandra M

Enjoyed the stunning scenery and the Islamic architecture

Geoffrey M

Overall, the trip was a great experience, and aload of fun and extremely educational.

Ian S

Enjoyed the great variety. As I usually go on walking tours, Kyrgyzstan was obviously a highlight. Hanging off the side of a white water raft was just part of the fun. Even the days when I was off by myself or the long travel days had their own magic.

John P

Enjoyed Kyrgyzstan the most - lovely mountains, lakes and small towns.

David C

Enjoyed the variety, adventure, great crew and good hotels

Robyn V

Loved the wild camping and the guest houses were also great.

Peter S

Kyrgyzstan was a standout memory staying in yurts and interacting with the people.

Julia S

Everything was great and well maintained, thanks Jim!

Charlotte F

I love travelling with Dragoman. It is the perfect mix of company and solo travel

Kit G

The trip itinerary and planning for contingencies was extremely good.

John B

Enjoyed all of it, really. but the varied beauty and the people of Kyrgistan were most memorable.

Eleanor O

Fantastic, well organised, would love to repeat

Christian F

Great leader and driver. Well planned out itinerary.

Peter R

Overall, we had a wonderful time - endless new places, faces, adventures, misadventures, changes of weather and itinerary, culinary and navigational challenges, etc etc! Domingo and Euan were excellent leaders, guides, mechanics and 'daddies' to us all, and certainly did their very best to ensure we all had as good and safe an adventure as possible.

Robyn D

Cook groups were great...we always ate wonderful meals. Tents were top quality. Everything worked well.
