Cameroon Back

Cameroon is a wonderfully diverse country with over 200 different languages. The name Cameroon comes from Rio dos Camarões (“River of Prawns”). It is referred to as 'Africa in Miniature' because it is so diverse.

Cameroon has a very high literacy rate and has many strong aspects of culture. This includes rhythmic drumming, flute music, pottery, masks and leather work. Each major group within the country has its own cultures and traditions.

Sport plays a large part in the day to day life of the people of Cameroon. Traditionally this includes canoe racing along the coast, wrestling, tug of war and running. Increasingly football is centre stage both at grassroots level and on the world stage with the 2000 Olympic Gold Medal being won by Cameroon. The women’s national football team is known as the 'Indomitable Lionesses'!

Just over half of the population is involved in farming in some way. Lots of this is on a small scale; however, they do contribute to the export of many goods, especially cocoa beans, Robusta coffee and sugar. Subsistence farming is also common with families growing beans, yams, plantain and corn.

Cameroon is fairly self-sufficient; it is able to provide enough food for its population and even exports some of its livestock to surrounding countries.
