Reasons to go to Rio Carnival

Our first trip heading all the way from Cartagena to Rio Carnival is due to depart in October and we thought now was a good time to look at why you might like to head to the biggest party in the world!

  1. Carnival is one of those once-in-a-lifetime experiences. Witness a whole city come to a complete standstill; see enormous floats and Samba dancers in all their elaborate costumes compete to be the greatest Samba school in the Carnival; dress up in your glitter and sequins, join the locals, dance to Samba beats & just take in the chaos and fun that is Rio Carnival.
  2. Party like a local! Carnival may be a major draw for tourists, but actually it’s one of the best opportunities to meet and mix with local Cariocas (people from Rio).  All over Rio, every day and night, there are street blocos (parties), where floats accompanied by musicians and crowds of revellers make their way from point to point. Usually they have a theme – anything from the famous Beatles bloco to blocos dedicated to cats & dogs!
  3. Escape the winter weather – with temperatures in February usually around 25 – 30 degrees Celsius, Carnival offers the perfect escape to the sun and since the city is surrounded by sprawling beaches, you can cool off in the sea or relax and enjoy a Caipirinha on the famous Copacabana beach
  4. It’s greener than you might think!! Rio is home to one of the largest urban rainforests in the world: the Floresta de Tijuca. When most people think of Rio Carnival, they think street parties, music and costumes – but there’s so much more to Rio.
  5. Now is a great time to book – with return flights from London to Rio from £595! and new direct flights with Norwegian and British Airways, you can be there in only 11hrs from London.

Our Carnival Complete Experience includes tickets to Sunday night’s Sambadrome Parade in Sector 11, a tour of Sugar Loaf Mountain and Corcovado, and our group will head out together with experienced Drago leaders to one of the street blocos and for a night out in the famous Rio Scenarium. We have lots of escorted optional activities too – from paddleboarding to jungle hikes, from cooking classes to donning a costume to Join the Parade.

If you have a little more time available – why not start your adventure in Buenos Aires or even Lima and travel overland through Patagonia?!
