Ben Sims

Business Development Manager and Agency Sales Support

Ben has been part of the Dragoman family since late 2012, first joining us as one of our overland crew in Asia and the Nile Route on the back of a wealth of backpacking and adventuring experience across the world. After taking some time off the road to explore Australia in 2014 he joined our busy team in the office, bringing his incredible amount of experience and knowledge with him.

A Little Bit About Ben

Having spent the first three years of my childhood in Bahrain in the Middle East and the rest exploring the local forests of Kent in search of wildlife and adventure, I always knew travel and exploration would be a large part of my life. At 17 I completed an apprenticeship in sales and management at Thomas Cook. Following this I backpacked around the world for a year and I have worked in the adventure travel industry in a number of roles ever since, greatly enjoying my work and regularly feeding my habit for travel and adventure at the same time. During this period I completed a degree in Geography, specializing in eco-tourism and human impacts on the environment. In 2012 I joined Dragoman to lead overland expeditions, combining all of my passions together: people, culture, wildlife, bush craft, tracking, geography, travel and adventure. I lead trips throughout India, Nepal, Central Asia and North East Africa. I recently returned from a private 4x4 expedition exploring the Australian outback.

- What is your favourite destination?

I think every destination has its good parts and not so good parts. I don’t think I have a favourite, but if I had to choose it would probably be Kenya. As a youngster I read a lot of Wilbur Smith and his passion for Africa and particularly its people and wildlife mesmerized me, and Kenya really fulfilled those images I had always dreamed of. I felt a great connection with Africa in general. Its incredible and colorful tribes, people, wildlife, terrain and beaches just simply blew me away and on occasion left me breathless.

- What has been the most surprising destination you've been to?

Kyrgyzstan in Central Asia was somewhere I really had no clue about before going there, even as many years as a travel consultant. Central Asia in general is still a much undiscovered region in terms of commercial travel despite its incredible history. If you want adventure, out of this world scenery as well as a fantastic cultural experience to match then Kyrgyzstan certainly won’t disappoint.

- What has been your favourite or most memorable occasion whilst travelling?

There have been so many breathtaking moments over the years but one that stands out in particular was driving for the first time into a traditional Samburu village in Northern Kenya. Driving through the national park there and seeing the abundance of wildlife particularly the elephants and giraffe freely wandering around us with no boundaries, was a very special moment indeed.

- Where is the next destination on your list?

One of the gifts of travel is that there is always somewhere new to see! Being more drawn towards the natural world and particularly wildlife it has to be the Serengeti. It is the mother of all safari adventures and somewhere I can’t believe I have not been to yet!

- What is your one piece of advice for future overlanders?

Push yourself out of you comfort zone. We never learn anything about ourselves if we stay within the realms of our own comfort zones, so push yourself outside of yours, even just a little and you may be amazed at how good it feels and the confidence it will create. Oh and of course, having an open mind, always being prepared and expecting the unexpected!
