What are family adventure holidays?
Dragoman family adventures
Our family adventure holidays are trips designed to appeal to children as well as adults, open to families with kids and teenagers aged from 7 to 18.
Our truck based overland family tours are designed to combine excitement, relaxation, learning and fun. These are active holidays, with plenty to see and do, and meeting the local people is an essential part of the journey, whether it’s a spontaneous football match with local kids, visiting a school or buying your lunch from a local market. Trips with children are often really special because kids have such a great ability to break down barriers with their curiosity and locals always greet them with much affection.![]()
The trips mix the traditional relaxation of a family holiday with active adventure, so that you have an all round experience. On these tours we try, where possible, to ensure you have at least two nights in the each destination, and accommodation is chosen carefully to provide your family with little things that can make your stay more enjoyable - such as restaurants nearby and hotels or campsites with swimming pools.
Big truck adventures in Africa
In Africa, overlanding is undoubtedly the way to go. Travelling with families on an overland truck is a superb holiday. True outdoor pursuit stuff, camping at night around a fire in the middle of the wilds, roasting marshmallows, going on safari or staying in a lovely beach stilt house on the shores of the Indian Ocean. These are the family memories that will live on far beyond the holiday itself

The trips are a mixture of camping and hotels, allowing you a few 'oases of comfort' to balance out the 'out there' adventures. Hotels will range from 3 - 4 star, but will be full of character. Camping is either in purpose built campsites with facilities (usually hot and cold showers) or rough camping in the wilds. However, it is usually possible to upgrade into a room, a tree-house, or a rondavel (comfortable thatched hut).
You’ll be travelling on one of our purpose-built Mercedes trucks. We will provide all the camping equipment and you will have a three person crew to look after you, including a local cook. Our camping food may not be haute cuisine but the cooks are fantastic and produce some amazing meals.
You will be travelling with 3-5 other families and the usual group size will be 16 - 18 people.
Imagine paddling through the Okavango Delta in a dug-out canoe, or sledging on a tea tray down the hugest sand dune you’ve ever seen in the Namib Desert. Or how about spotting lions in the Serengeti or taking a camel ride to a Masai village – whatever family trip you choose you can be sure both you and your kids will have a holiday of a lifetime, sharing experiences that you’ll never forget.
