La Paz has 'a lot in store for adventure-seeking travellers'
Bolivia's capital La Paz could be an ideal destination for anyone looking for adventure while travelling around South America.
The city has been named number one on the list of the top five best places in Latin America for backpackers by TNT Magazine.
In particular, the publication highlights La Paz's credentials as a top city for those with a sense of adventure.
"Inca ruins, real-life witches and the world’s most dangerous road - La Paz has a hell of a lot in store for adventure-seeking travellers," it commented.
La Paz is the world's highest capital city and sits on a basin at 11,975ft above sea level and surrounded by the Andes.
This not only makes for an absolutely stunning backdrop, it also means that the city is home to some of the most exciting roads anywhere on planet.
One of these is the notorious 'Death Road' - a highway which clings to mountainsides as it runs from La Paz to Coroico and descends around 11,000ft in just 43 miles.
"Adrenaline junkies can take the road by the saddle of a mountain bike, careering down as close to the vertical drop as they dare," said TNT.
For a slightly less terrifying adventure, visitors to La Paz may want to take in a trip to the Mercado de los Brujos, aka the Witches' Market.
"Tourists are routinely baffled by the array of items on sale here - including amulets, potions, dried birds and llama fetuses - to cater for practising witches in need of spell ingredients and other spooky must-haves," the magazine explained.
Finally, while La Paz is a thriving modern city, it also has a fascinating past which is well worth exploring.
TNT suggests a trip to the nearby Incan Tiahuanaco ruins, which many archaeologists consider the world’s most ancient city.
