Those after a true sense of Mexican culture and history while on Central America tours should consider a stay in Mexico City.

According to the Mexico Tourism Board's Carmen Laborin, the country's capital is the ideal place for a cultural experience.

"If you're looking for culture, think Mexico City, rich in history, dynamic and centrally located," she commented.

Ms Laborin recommended a trip to the city's "world-class" museums, such as the Palace of Fine Arts, National Palace and Metropolitan Cathedral.

"Later, feel free to explore the ancient pyramids and Spanish colonial architecture," she added.

The expert also suggested taking a hands-on approach to discovering Mexican culture, such as by taking salsa or tango lessons, or learning to cook traditional Mexican cuisine with courses on offer in locations throughout the country.

With a population close to nine million, Mexico City is a lively, thriving metropolis full of things to do and see with a diverse feel and lively nightlife.

It also has a fascinating history, dating back to its founding by the Aztecs in 1325, and those coming to the city can visit the ruins of the ancient Aztec city at Tenochtitlan, located within central Mexico City.

However, there are a number of destinations within Mexico outside of the capital that are well worth a visit if the opportunity arises while on an overland adventure in Central America.

Ms Laborin recommended the Los Cabos region for those looking for an active trip.

"If you're looking for adventure, think Los Cabos [with] water sports, fishing, trekking [and] whale watching," she said.

And if you want to unwind afterwards, Mexico offers a number of stunning beaches ideal for this.

"If you're looking for sun and beach, think the Riviera Maya, [which is like] paradise - bonding with nature, white powder beaches and turquoise coloured waters," she added.
