The Sahara, An Adventure Worth Having

Crossing the dunefields of Mauritania

Overnight with Moorish nomads

The Sahara beckons once again. Our season of Sahara trips starts in September and go through to March and we have three programmes that feature this amazing desert.

For the ultimate in desert adventure, we highly recommend our 16 night, Discover the Moorish Sahara in Mauritania (cool video on this page). This excellent value trip is very affordable and gives a real insight into life in the Sahara Desert, including visits to remote Ksours (wall villages) surrounded by dunes and to stunning oases. Check out this story from last years Sahara adventure.

We then have a longer 5 week trip from the UK to Dakar in Senegal, which crosses Morocco, The Western Sahara, Mauritania and Senegal. Click here for full details of the Morocco & Trans Saharan overland adventure.

My personal favourite, however, is our epic 27 night overland adventure journey down the Nile from Cairo to Khartoum in Sudan. This combines the splendours and ease of travelling in Egypt with the raw adventure of crossing the Sudanese Nubian Sahara. If you want a trip with a difference look at our Nile & Deserts of Egypt & Sudan.

21 Day Trip to Malawi's Lake of Stars Music Festival

Artist at Lake of Stars

Mixing with the locals

It's 3000 kms to Lake Malawi, we've got a full tank of gas, half a pack of cigarettes, it's dark, and we're wearing sunglasses....

A first ever.... 21 days Jo'burg to Lilongwe, via South Africa, Mozambique, Malawi and Zambia. Think music, beaches, nightclubs, bars, wildlife, local villages, rhythm and culture. This is the Africa that the tourists miss, on a roadtrip of over 3000 kms up the Indian Ocean to Malawi, the Warm Heart of Africa. 22 different languages, a thousand different rhythms (give or take one or two), a shedload of nightclubs and bars and of course, the bands. In addition we will take you to one of the best wildlife parks in Africa. Time to check out the local music scene and to join in.

Festival On The Niger - February 2008

The festivals puppet show

Festival of the Niger at Segou

If you want the ultimate in West African Music Festivals you should try to get to the Festival on the Niger at Segou in Mali. Although not as famous as Mali's other big gig, the Festival of the Desert, our tour leaders and past passengers agree that it is far better.

Don't take our word for it, check out this article written by Mary Walker, one of this years passengers, Festival on the Niger.

Our February departure of the 21 day Sounds of the Sahara trip will not only take you to this amazing event but also show you the rest of Mali, with drumming workshops, boat trip up the Niger River to Timbuktu, trekking in the Dogon Area and Dogon mask dancing to name but a few.

The line up for 2008 music festival of confirmed African musicians includes: Habib Koité, Les Go de Koteba, Toumani Diabaté, Oumou Sangaré, Tinariwen, Doussou Bagayogo, Abdoulaye Diabaté, Bassékou Kouyaté, Mah Kouyaté no 2, Papa Gaoussou Diarra, Lobi Traoré and Joep Pelt, Néba Solo, Vieux Farka Touré and his band

Then there's the puppetry, the poetry, the artwork and pottery and the sheer vibrance of this unique event on the banks of the Niger River.

The Festival Of The Desert

Tuaregs come from all over Mali to the Festival

The music Festival Of The Desert has become a phenomenon; such a phenomenon that we have now filled the music Festival of the Desert departure for 2007. We recommend anyone that was thinking of taking this trip, to serious look at the Festival on the Niger, as described above or book early for 2008. Click here for full details of both departures of our Sounds of the Sahara trip.

Again don't take our word for it, check out what one of our passengers thought of it. Diana Macadam, a freelance journo wrote this great report of the Dragoman Overland Rio Carnival trip
