South America and Africa Music Festivals

Southern Africa Music Festivals - Malawi's Lake of Stars Festival

It's 3000 kms to Lake Malawi, we've got a full tank of gas, half a pack of cigarettes, it's dark, and we're wearing sunglasses....

A first ever.... 21 days Jo'burg to Lilongwe, via South Africa, Mozambique, Malawi and Zambia. Think music, beaches, nightclubs, bars, wildlife, local villages, rhythm and culture. This is the Africa that the tourists miss, on a roadtrip of over 3000 kms up the Indian Ocean to Malawi, the Warm Heart of Africa.

West Africa music tours are now well known but who has heard of a southern Africa music tour? 22 different languages, a thousand different rhythms (give or take one or two), a shedload of nightclubs and bars and of course, the bands. In addition we will take you to one of the best wildlife parks in Africa. Time to check out the Africa music scene and to join in. On this Africa music tour, you will live Africa, see Africa, smell Africa and discover the rhythms and sounds of this incredibly audible continent

West Africa Music Festivals - Festival On The Niger 2008

If you want the ultimate in West African Music tours you should try to get to the Festival on the Niger at Segou in Mali. Although not as famous as Mali's other big gig, the Festival of the Desert, our tour leaders and past passengers agree that it is far better.

Don't take our word for it, check out this article written by Mary Walker, one of this years passengers, Festival on the Niger

For those interested in the Festival on the Niger 2008, our February departure of the 21 day Sounds of the Sahara trip will not only take you to this amazing event but also show you the rest of Mali, with drumming workshops, boat trip up the Niger River to Timbuktu, trekking in the Dogon Area and Dogon mask dancing to name but a few.

The line up for Festival on the Niger 2008 includes: Habib Koité, Les Go de Koteba, Toumani Diabaté, Oumou Sangaré, Tinariwen, Doussou Bagayogo, Abdoulaye Diabaté, Bassékou Kouyaté, Mah Kouyaté n° 2, Papa Gaoussou Diarra, Lobi Traoré and Joep Pelt, Néba Solo, Vieux Farka Touré and his band

Then there's the puppetry, the poetry, the artwork and pottery and the sheer vibrance of this unique event on the banks of the Niger River. This is what makes the Festival on the Niger so much more of an all round experience that the Festival of the Desert.

The Festival Of The Desert 2008

The music Festival Of The Desert has become a phenomenon; such a phenomenon that we have now filled the music Festival of the Desert 2008 departure. We recommend therfore that anyone wanting to go of the 2008 Festival of the Desert trip, that you postpone your trip either to january 2009 or take the Festival on the Niger 2008 departure in February. Check out the Festival on the Niger as described.. Click here for full details of both departures of our Sounds of the Sahara trip

Please note: Both the festival of the Desert and the Festival of the Niger are very local events and there are few western amenities. They have not been designed for tourists and this is the real beuaty of them
