Money and kitties
Prices are per person for the cost of the land trip only, except where stated otherwise, and being group travel will be based on shared accommodation where applicable.
The website carries up-to-date prices, localized to GBP, EUR, USD, CAD, AUD or NZD currencies – and may differ from those in the brochure, which were correct at the time of print.
Please note a ‘kitty’ cost is payable in addition to the trip price, a central fund managed by the group for any group expenditure (more about kitties below).
Please note the trip price and kitty excludes:
- Optional activities
- Travel insurance
- Connecting flights and airport transfers, personal taxes (including personal border taxes) – or any other transportation costs while not on the trip
- Passports and visas, vaccinations and kit
- Extra accommodation or upgrades
- Contingency route expenses in case of war/flood, etc
- Any further spending money.
What’s a kitty?
The kitty is a group fund, paid separately from the trip price at the start of your trip, which covers all things that the whole group does, such as:
- Hotel accommodation and campsite fees
- Meals whilst camping (not in hotels)
- Activities listed as included (e.g. National Park entrances, excursions and local guides).
Each passenger pays into a central fund, monitored by the Dragoman crew. It’s payable in full at the start of your trip, and in instalments at the start of each individual trip on combination trips
The kitty system is very unique to overlanding to provide maximum flexibility and best value on the road. You can see exactly what is being paid for, you get everything at cost price, it keeps costs competitive buying as a group and saves on administrative costs.
Kitty prices are estimated in USD when we print the brochure then reviewed monthly because local costs and exchange rates vary throughout the year. It's therefore important once you book your trip you check the website regularly and just before departure for any changes to the amount.
Your kitty can be paid in a mixture of US Dollar cash and local currency. Most travellers choose to bring a cash passport (www.cashpassport.com) with them for withdrawing local currency, as it's very secure, working like an ATM card drawing out local currency from ATMs within each country you travel. Please note we no longer accept Travellers Cheques on our trips, because our passengers and leaders have found it increasingly difficult to find banks which change change them throughout the world.
Don’t forget! Spending money
How much you spend personally depends on how many extra activity you want to do. All hotel food, drinks, laundry, souvenirs, taxis and restaurants are part of your personal spending.
You may also want to include some money for local tips. Good local guides and crew members can make your trip experience exceptional, and (even modest) tips are hugely appreciated.
A rough spending guide is included in trip notes.
Payment and deposits
To secure your booking, we require a non-refundable deposit of 10% of the land trip price or £200 (£400 for Inca trips and Patagonia trips and £650 for Gorillas trips), whichever is greater.
Final payment is due no later than 60 days before you travel (or in full for bookings made within 60 days of travelling).
So book early for minimal cost to secure your place and save up for the final payment!
Kitties are payable to your Tour Leader at the start of each trip (so payable in installments on combination trips made up of several single trips).
